Sage Green Knickers at the Castle Road Launderette
This painting is based on a childhood memory of visiting the local launderette close to where I lived. It had a kind of sci-fi vibe with weird sounds and smells. There was a doorway into another section that seeemed very mysterious – scary but intriguing. I was darker and quiter in there and it felt like I was walking into another dimension.
I began with a rough sketch and then applied some collage elements of various papers I had made using either geliplate, lino printing or transfer printing off glass. Over this I built up layers using acrylic paint. Into this I scratched lines using a scalpel and rubbed in some charcoal to give the washing machines a battered effect.
